RYE BASE
Rey(Secale cereale) A biennial plant similar to
wheat that grows 1.2 to 2 meters high. The upper
culm is covered with fine hair with the spikelet ripen-
ing at the upper end. Becoming about 10 to 15 centi-
meters long, it generally is 2-flowered with extremely
thin and needle-like glumes. History: Considered to
have originated in Asia, rye has been found in
British and other Iron Age sites, but not in earlier
Egyptian or other ancient remains. Still an important
crop today, its north boundary is the Arctic Circle.
